what are MMORPGs?

Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs) allow thousands of people to play the same game all together at the same time. World of Warcraft is the most popular example. Joining one of these virtual worlds is often free (but you'll have to pay get full access). Some require a monthly subscription fee.

Second Life
This game has a serious cult following with adults. This virtual 3-D world allows you to do just about anything you can do in the real world. Build a house or business (where you can make real money), socialize with millions of other people and explore. Teen Second Life is for the 13-17 set.
Fee: Basic access is free. Upgrade with a monthly subscription.


Habbo Hotel
Like Second Life, this is another virtual world. This one emphasizes social networking and is hugely popular with the teen set.

RuneScape
Medieval fantasy game popular with the male teen and tween set.
Fee: Free and subscription versions available.


MapleStory
Hugely popular Korean game where you battle monsters, play casual games or just chat and socialize. Free with optional paid upgrades.

Guild Wars
Unlike most of its competitors (like World of Warcraft) this game doesn't require you to pay a monthly subscription fee. You just pay a one-time fee upfront.
